Test MIDI

Play your FM-1 or SMK-37 from this page over USB or Bluetooth, see what it sends back, and test the FM-1's TRS MIDI jack. Only notes and controllers are sent: nothing is installed or changed on the device.

USB-MIDI

not connected

Plug in the FM-1 with a USB data cable, then Connect. The browser asks once to allow MIDI.

Bluetooth MIDI

not connected

On the FM-1: HOME, OPTIONS, BLUETOOTH ON. Then Connect and pick FM1-DOCK xxxx in the list.

Play

to: nothing yet

The keys play whatever module runs, over every connection that is on. Computer keys: A W S E D F T G Y H U J K O L P ; ', Z / X an octave down / up.

Monitor

What the FM-1 sends: its keys and, with KNOBS CC on, KNOB1–4 as CC 74, 71, 73, 72 (on a module's own screen only: in the picker and OPTIONS the knobs move through the lists); with MIDI THRU on, what comes in on the TRS jack. Times are in ms since the page opened.

The TRS jack

FM-1

The FM-1's 3.5 mm MIDI IN, tested from a computer: the page sends notes into the jack and reads them back over USB.

Set it up

  1. A USB-MIDI interface with a MIDI OUT (or a synth that passes USB-MIDI on to its MIDI OUT) on this computer.
  2. Its MIDI OUT into the FM-1's MIDI IN jack, with a 5-pin DIN to 3.5 mm TRS adapter. Adapters come as Type A and Type B: if nothing arrives, try the other kind.
  3. The FM-1 on USB too, connected above.
  4. On the FM-1: HOME, OPTIONS, MIDI THRU ON (what comes in on the jack goes on to USB), and MIDI CH on ALL.

Run it

Eight notes, on and off, 300 ms apart, into the interface. The module plays them too.

Help

Which browser

USB-MIDI (WebMIDI): Chrome or Edge on a computer, Chrome on Android. Bluetooth (Web Bluetooth): Chrome or Edge on macOS, Windows, ChromeOS and Android. Not Safari, not Firefox, nothing on an iPhone or iPad.

Bluetooth not in the list

A connected FM-1 stops advertising: disconnect it in Audio MIDI Setup, a DAW or a phone first. Check that BLUETOOTH says ON. A Mac needs Bluetooth allowed for the browser (System Settings, Privacy & Security, Bluetooth).

The BLUETOOTH line

OFF: switched off. ON: advertising. LINKED: something connected. READY: and it listens to the notes. HELD: this start was a safe start (OCT+) or followed a failed one; switch it OFF and ON. NO CAL: the radio's calibration from the stock firmware is not there; install the stock firmware, switch on once, then fm1-dock again. MISSING: this build has no Bluetooth.

Mac

Audio MIDI Setup, Window, Show MIDI Studio, the Bluetooth button, Connect on FM1-DOCK xxxx. Then it is a MIDI port for every app.

iPhone, iPad

GarageBand: Settings, Advanced, Bluetooth MIDI Devices, then the FM-1. Many music apps have the same page; once connected, every app sees it.

Android, Windows

Android: a BLE-MIDI connect app, then any MIDI app; or this page in Chrome. Windows: most apps do not see Bluetooth MIDI on their own (Windows MIDI Services, KORG's BLE-MIDI driver or MIDIberry bridge it); this page works without them.

TRS: nothing comes back

MIDI THRU ON? The interface's port picked, not the FM-1's? Try the other adapter type (A / B). Does the module play the notes? Then the jack works and only MIDI THRU is off.

TRS: one message late

A key does nothing until the next one, and the last note hangs: fm1-dock 0.6 read the jack that way. Update from the page; if it still happens, open an issue with the test's table.
